If you’re new to HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems, selecting the right size BTU (British Thermal Unit) system can seem daunting. This guide will break down the process into simple steps.

1. What is BTU?

  • Definition: BTU measures the amount of energy needed to heat or cool a space. More BTUs mean more heating or cooling power.

2. Why Size Matters

  • An undersized system will struggle to heat or cool your home, leading to discomfort.
  • An oversized system will cycle on and off too frequently, wasting energy and causing wear and tear.

3. Measure Your Space

  • Find Your Square Footage:
    • Measure the length and width of each room.
    • Multiply the length by the width for each room, then add them up for the total square footage.
  • Example:
    • Living Room: 15 ft x 20 ft = 300 sq. ft.
    • Bedroom: 10 ft x 12 ft = 120 sq. ft.
    • Total = 300 + 120 = 420 sq. ft.

4. General BTU Guidelines

  • A rough estimate is 20 BTUs per square foot.
  • Example: For 420 sq. ft.: 420 sq. ft. × 20 BTUs/sq. ft. = 8,400 BTUs 

5. Adjusting BTU Calculations Based on Specific Factors

When determining the right BTU size for your HVAC system, it's important to consider various factors that can affect your heating and cooling needs. Here’s a more detailed breakdown:

- Ceiling Height

  • Standard Ceiling (8 feet): The basic BTU calculation (20 BTUs per square foot) works well.
  • Higher Ceilings: For ceilings taller than 8 feet, you’ll need to increase the BTU calculation. A common rule of thumb is to add about 10% for each additional foot of height.
    • Example: If you have a 10-foot ceiling in a 400 sq. ft. room:
      • Base BTUs: 400×20=8,000400 \times 20 = 8,000
      • Increase for height: 8,000×10%=8008,000 \times 10\% = 800
      • Total BTUs Needed: 8,8008,800

- Insulation Quality

  • Well-Insulated Homes: If your home has good insulation, you can stick with the basic BTU calculation.
  • Average Insulation: If your home has average insulation, consider adding 10% to your BTU needs.
  • Poor Insulation: For homes with poor insulation, you may need to add 20% or more. Check for drafts, gaps, or insufficient insulation in walls and attics.

    We offer standard free shipping via UPS Ground, FedEx Ground, and Freight for all orders in the United States. We do not currently ship to international locations.

    Damages & Missing Items

    We have a 30-day return policy, which means you have 30 days after receiving your item to request a return.

    Cancellations

    Exchanges

    The fastest way to ensure you get what you want is to return the item you have (see return process above), and once the return is accepted, make a separate purchase for the new item.

    Our goal is to consistently provide the best pricing in the marketplace online and we work very diligently to do so. If you happen to see another online shop that offers a lower price than us within six months of your date please let us know and we’ll be happy to refund the difference on your original payment method. Moreover, because we are consistently working with our suppliers to get better rates we know that you can feel very comfortable and confident that you are seeing the best prices that can be provided for the products listed on our site.

    Moving forward if you find the same item that we carry on another website that has a lower price please submit that to us within six months of your purchase date and we will refund you the difference.

    Beginner’s Guide to Choosing the Right Size BTU HVAC System

    If you’re new to HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems, selecting the right size BTU (British Thermal Unit) system can seem daunting. This guide will break down the process into simple steps.

    1. What is BTU?

    • Definition: BTU measures the amount of energy needed to heat or cool a space. More BTUs mean more heating or cooling power.

    2. Why Size Matters

    • An undersized system will struggle to heat or cool your home, leading to discomfort.
    • An oversized system will cycle on and off too frequently, wasting energy and causing wear and tear.

    3. Measure Your Space

    • Find Your Square Footage:
      • Measure the length and width of each room.
      • Multiply the length by the width for each room, then add them up for the total square footage.
    • Example:
      • Living Room: 15 ft x 20 ft = 300 sq. ft.
      • Bedroom: 10 ft x 12 ft = 120 sq. ft.
      • Total = 300 + 120 = 420 sq. ft.

    4. General BTU Guidelines

    • A rough estimate is 20 BTUs per square foot.
    • Example: For 420 sq. ft.: 420 sq. ft. × 20 BTUs/sq. ft. = 8,400 BTUs

    When determining the right BTU size for your HVAC system, it's important to consider various factors that can affect your heating and cooling needs. Here’s a more detailed breakdown:

    - Ceiling Height

    • Standard Ceiling (8 feet): The basic BTU calculation (20 BTUs per square foot) works well.
    • Higher Ceilings: For ceilings taller than 8 feet, you’ll need to increase the BTU calculation. A common rule of thumb is to add about 10% for each additional foot of height.
      • Example: If you have a 10-foot ceiling in a 400 sq. ft. room:
        • Base BTUs: 400×20=8,000400 \times 20 = 8,000
        • Increase for height: 8,000×10%=8008,000 \times 10\% = 800
        • Total BTUs Needed: 8,8008,800

    - Insulation Quality

    • Well-Insulated Homes: If your home has good insulation, you can stick with the basic BTU calculation.
    • Average Insulation: If your home has average insulation, consider adding 10% to your BTU needs.

      We have a 30-day return policy, which means you have 30 days after receiving your item to request a return.

      To be eligible for a return, your item must be in the same condition that you received it, unused and in its original packaging.

      Cancellations

      If your order has been shipped, you will not be charged a 5% administration fee, the standard return procedures will apply and you will be responsible for the cost of return shipping, and a 15% restocking fee will be ducted from your refund.       Exchanges

      The fastest way to ensure you get what you want is to return the item you have (see return process above), and once the return is accepted, make a separate purchase for the new item.

      Price Match Policy

      Our goal is to consistently provide the best pricing in the marketplace online and we work very diligently to do so. If you happen to see another online shop that offers a lower price than us within six months of your date please let us know and we’ll be happy to refund the difference on your original payment method. Moreover, because we are consistently working with our suppliers to get better rates we know that you can feel very comfortable and confident that you are seeing the best prices that can be provided for the products listed on our site.

      Moving forward if you find the same item that we carry on another website that has a lower price please submit that to us within six months of your purchase date and we will refund you the difference.

      If it is a case of seeing a lower price on another website and we need to send a partial refund simply email us the link to the exact product and brand from our site and also the link from our competitors site so we can inspect the pricing. Again this needs to be within six months from the date of your order and we will review your submission and apply a credit if necessary.

      Amazing Portable Comfort!

      I purchased this item thinking I would use it when I went camping. I live in Florida and it is hot I was looking to extend my camping season! I never imagined I would use it in so many versatile ways, so quickly! First, the air conditioning is cold and consistent. We recently lost our electric because of the hurricane that came through. I slept comfortably because of this machine. I ran the exhaust hose out my window and used the foam insulators that came with it to seal the gap. I set the temp to a modest cool to preserve the machine for all night use. The next morning I hooked it up to the EcoFlow solar panels and it recharged while I was at work. My electric was on when I got back home, but I was grateful to have this on hand in this crisis.
      I used it in my tent a couple of times to beat that humid nights. I ran the exhaust and the opted to use the drain hose provided and I stayed so comfortable. The first night I turned it too high and had to use my backup EcoFlow RIVER Max portable power station to make it to morning in comfort. It worked amazing and I am excited to be able to tent camp in Florida in August!!
      The last thing I would like to mention is, it kept our dogs comfortable. My dog is a dock diver and the competitions can be long and very hot! Most people had fans on their dog's kennels. Not mine! She had her own personal AC blowing 68 degree air into her kennel. She was able to rest comfortably in her kennel between jumps, it worked like a charm! As you can expect the colder you run the machine and the higher the fan speed will have a direct impact on longevity of use for each charge. Even in the Florida summer heat it will keep you comfortable!

      Just What I Was Looking For

      I've got the Wave 2 + Add-on Battery, and must say, I have never had a 'portable' AC unit and this exceeded my expectations. On hot nights out tent camping, it is amazing, in eco mode it lasts long enough with the add-on battery to keep me comfortable all night. I normally have it set up in my bedroom, as I like to sleep cool and cooling one room with this is much more efficient than cranking down the central AC.

      It's very quiet in eco and night modes, and not loud enough to be a bother even on max. I have also tried the heater mode just to test it out and it definitely works, was blowing out 115*f in a 60*f room.

      I haven't even touched on the fact you can charge it on solar, that's free AC and heat! I've got 200w solar hooked up just to top it up from time to time, but usually plug it into the wall. Being so efficient, (this thing only pulls like 250-400w) I don't feel guilty using grid power to run it.

      Though it may seem pricey, I don't think there's anything else available with such high output of cooling and heating coupled with a genuinely long lasting battery.

      So yes... I'd recommend it to anyone who is thinking about it. Don't skimp out and get a cheaper one that is less powerful and doesn't have heat, also I highly recommend the add-on battery because that opens up a world of possibilities for use overlanding, camping and more.

      Haven’t actually used it in hot conditions but the form and fit is incredible. The interface is excellent. I’m going to put two on my boat with several ecoflow power banks and some solar panels. An excellent unit and I highly recommend!

      Amazing Portable Comfort!

      I purchased this item thinking I would use it when I went camping. I live in Florida and it is hot I was looking to extend my camping season! I never imagined I would use it in so many versatile ways, so quickly! First, the air conditioning is cold and consistent. We recently lost our electric because of the hurricane that came through. I slept comfortably because of this machine. I ran the exhaust hose out my window and used the foam insulators that came with it to seal the gap. I set the temp to a modest cool to preserve the machine for all night use. The next morning I hooked it up to the EcoFlow solar panels and it recharged while I was at work. My electric was on when I got back home, but I was grateful to have this on hand in this crisis.
      I used it in my tent a couple of times to beat that humid nights. I ran the exhaust and the opted to use the drain hose provided and I stayed so comfortable. The first night I turned it too high and had to use my backup EcoFlow RIVER Max portable power station to make it to morning in comfort. It worked amazing and I am excited to be able to tent camp in Florida in August!!
      The last thing I would like to mention is, it kept our dogs comfortable. My dog is a dock diver and the competitions can be long and very hot! Most people had fans on their dog's kennels. Not mine! She had her own personal AC blowing 68 degree air into her kennel. She was able to rest comfortably in her kennel between jumps, it worked like a charm! As you can expect the colder you run the machine and the higher the fan speed will have a direct impact on longevity of use for each charge. Even in the Florida summer heat it will keep you comfortable!

      Portable and cool

      Great for small spaces. Battery really lasts. I love that I can move it around without cable restriction and charge with solar.

      Just What I Was Looking For

      I've got the Wave 2 + Add-on Battery, and must say, I have never had a 'portable' AC unit and this exceeded my expectations. On hot nights out tent camping, it is amazing, in eco mode it lasts long enough with the add-on battery to keep me comfortable all night. I normally have it set up in my bedroom, as I like to sleep cool and cooling one room with this is much more efficient than cranking down the central AC.

      It's very quiet in eco and night modes, and not loud enough to be a bother even on max. I have also tried the heater mode just to test it out and it definitely works, was blowing out 115*f in a 60*f room.

      I haven't even touched on the fact you can charge it on solar, that's free AC and heat! I've got 200w solar hooked up just to top it up from time to time, but usually plug it into the wall. Being so efficient, (this thing only pulls like 250-400w) I don't feel guilty using grid power to run it.

      Though it may seem pricey, I don't think there's anything else available with such high output of cooling and heating coupled with a genuinely long lasting battery.

      So yes... I'd recommend it to anyone who is thinking about it. Don't skimp out and get a cheaper one that is less powerful and doesn't have heat, also I highly recommend the add-on battery because that opens up a world of possibilities for use overlanding, camping and more.

      Greenhouse heater

      Purchased this for a greenhouse to help with heating on the cold days. Works like a charm. Really like that I can use the app to adjust the temperature up or down based on the temperature.
