Goodman 2.5 Ton Dual Fuel System

This AHRI-certified dual fuel system (Certificate #216611826) pairs the Goodman GZV6SA3010 2.5-ton variable-speed heat pump with the GCVC800803BX 80% AFUE gas furnace and CAPEA3022C3 cased evaporator coil. Rated at 17.5 SEER2 and 8.5 HSPF2 for the heat pump mode, the system uses R-32 refrigerant (GWP 675) and automatically transitions between electric heat pump and gas furnace operation based on outdoor temperature. This system supports ComfortBridge™ communicating technology, enabling automatic airflow calibration and enhanced diagnostic reporting between the outdoor unit, furnace, and indoor coil. This system is not ENERGY STAR® Cold Climate or Most Efficient certified.

Note: If you would like to review the manufacturer Product Specifications, Warranty, Brochure, etc., for this system, please refer to the “Resources (System Manuals and Warranty)” Tab above on this page.

System Components

  • GZV6SA3010 — 2.5-Ton Variable-Speed Heat Pump Condenser (R-32, 17.5 SEER2 / 8.5 HSPF2), 28,400 BTU/h cooling at 95°F, 28,800 BTU/h heating at 47°F
  • CAPEA3022C3 — Cased Upflow/Downflow Evaporator Coil with factory-installed EEV, all-aluminum construction, R-32 optimized, 21" W x 21" D x 22" H
  • GCVC800803BX — 80,000 BTU/h 80% AFUE Downflow/Horizontal Gas Furnace, Two-Stage gas valve, Variable-Speed ECM blower motor, 17½" cabinet width, Low NOx

🛠 Pro-Installer Tip

The Technical Friction: In a dual fuel configuration, the GCVC800803BX furnace (Downflow/Horizontal) paired with the CAPEA3022C3 upflow/downflow coil requires precise clearance planning. The 21" coil depth must align with the 17½" furnace cabinet width, and the 1.75 fit designation means the coil-to-furnace transition must be verified for air leakage at the plenum connection.

Long-Term Prevention: On dual fuel changeover, confirm the outdoor thermostat lockout (balance point) is set correctly for the climate zone. If the heat pump operates below its economic balance point without switching to the 80% AFUE gas furnace, the homeowner faces inflated electric bills and compressor stress. Verify subcooling at the service valve reads 14±1°F per the GZV6S specification—an incorrect charge causes nuisance high-pressure lockouts 6–12 months post-install.

Expert Validation: Evacuate to ≤350 microns using a digital micron gauge before releasing the R-32 charge. R-32’s higher operating pressure compared to R-410A demands verified torque on all flare connections using a calibrated torque wrench (per manufacturer torque chart). Confirm gas furnace combustion analysis with a digital analyzer: CO <100 ppm in flue, O₂ between 6–9%.

Professional Standard: R-32 is classified A2L (mildly flammable) under ASHRAE 34. Verify compliance with local Mechanical Code amendments for A2L refrigerants, including charge limits in occupied spaces and required leak detection. EPA Section 608 certification is mandatory. Gas furnace installation must comply with local fuel gas codes and the Low NOx emission requirements for the applicable air quality district.

Key System Benefits

  • High-Efficiency Dual Fuel Operation: The 17.5 SEER2 / 8.5 HSPF2 heat pump automatically transitions to the 80% AFUE gas furnace when outdoor temperatures drop below the programmable balance point, optimizing energy costs across all seasons.
  • R-32 Low-GWP Refrigerant: R-32 has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 675—68% lower than R-410A (GWP 2,088). This reduces the system’s direct environmental impact while delivering equivalent or improved heat transfer efficiency.
  • Variable-Speed Compressor Technology: The GZV6S outdoor unit uses a variable-speed swing compressor that modulates capacity to match the actual load, reducing cycling losses and delivering tighter temperature control compared to fixed-speed systems.
  • All-Aluminum Evaporator Coil: The CAPEA3022C3 features an all-aluminum evaporator coil with a factory-installed EEV (Electronic Expansion Valve) for precise refrigerant metering across varying load conditions.
  • Variable-Speed ECM Furnace Blower: The GCVC800803BX furnace uses a variable-speed ecm blower motor with two-stage gas valve operation, providing consistent airflow across heating and cooling modes while minimizing electrical consumption at part load.
  • ComfortBridge™ Communication: System components communicate digitally for automatic airflow calibration, real-time fault diagnostics, and optimized staging between the heat pump and gas furnace modes.
