Goodman 2.5 Ton Dual Fuel System
This AHRI-certified dual fuel system (Certificate #215488199) pairs the Goodman GZV6SA3010 2.5-ton variable-speed heat pump with the GCVM970603BN 97% AFUE gas furnace and CHPEA3026B3 cased evaporator coil. Rated at 17.5 SEER2 and 8.5 HSPF2 for the heat pump mode, the system uses R-32 refrigerant (GWP 675) and automatically transitions between electric heat pump and gas furnace operation based on outdoor temperature. This system supports ComfortBridge™ communicating technology, enabling automatic airflow calibration and enhanced diagnostic reporting between the outdoor unit, furnace, and indoor coil. This system is not ENERGY STAR® Cold Climate or Most Efficient certified.

🛠 Pro-Installer Tip
The Technical Friction: Horizontal coil installations in attic spaces with the CHPEA3026B3 require careful attention to condensate routing. The 26" width of this horizontal coil demands adequate clearance on both service-access and drain-pan sides, and low-pitch attic rafters can limit the available workspace for brazing the ⅜" liquid and ⅞" suction connections.
Long-Term Prevention: Install a secondary float switch on the auxiliary drain pan and verify the primary condensate trap has a minimum 2" water column seal. R-32 systems operate at marginally higher discharge pressures than R-410A, so confirm subcooling at the service valve reads 14±1°F per the manufacturer specification. An incorrect charge will surface as a nuisance high-pressure lockout 6–12 months post-install, typically during the first sustained heat event.
Expert Validation: Use a digital micron gauge (target ≤350 microns) during evacuation—R-32’s lower GWP of 675 does not exempt it from proper evacuation standards. Verify superheat and subcooling with a calibrated digital manifold rather than analog gauges.
Professional Standard: R-32 is an A2L (mildly flammable) refrigerant. Ensure compliance with ASHRAE 34 safety classifications and any local amendments to the Mechanical Code regarding A2L refrigerant charge limits in occupied spaces. EPA Section 608 certification is required for handling.
Key System Benefits
- High-Efficiency Dual Fuel Operation: The 17.5 SEER2 / 8.5 HSPF2 heat pump automatically transitions to the 97% AFUE gas furnace when outdoor temperatures drop below the programmable balance point, optimizing energy costs across all seasons.
- R-32 Low-GWP Refrigerant: R-32 has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 675—68% lower than R-410A (GWP 2,088). This reduces the system’s direct environmental impact while delivering equivalent or improved heat transfer efficiency.
- Variable-Speed Compressor Technology: The GZV6S outdoor unit uses a variable-speed swing compressor that modulates capacity to match the actual load, reducing cycling losses and delivering tighter temperature control compared to fixed-speed systems.
- All-Aluminum Evaporator Coil: The CHPEA3026B3 features an all-aluminum evaporator coil with a factory-installed EEV (Electronic Expansion Valve) for precise refrigerant metering across varying load conditions.
- Variable-Speed ECM Furnace Blower: The GCVM970603BN furnace uses a variable-speed ecm blower motor with modulating gas valve operation, providing consistent airflow across heating and cooling modes while minimizing electrical consumption at part load.
- ComfortBridge™ Communication: System components communicate digitally for automatic airflow calibration, real-time fault diagnostics, and optimized staging between the heat pump and gas furnace modes.
