This Goodman 2-Ton 18.2 SEER2 / 9.0 HSPF2 Dual Fuel System pairs the GZV9S-series inverter-driven variable-speed heat pump condenser (Model: GZV9SA241C) with a 80,000 BTU 97% AFUE Modulating gas furnace (Model: GRVM970804CN) and a cased horizontal evaporator coil (Model: CHPEA4830D3). This AHRI-certified matched system (Certificate #: 216699909) uses R-32 refrigerant and is ENERGY STAR® certified. The dual fuel configuration provides efficient electric heat pump operation down to -20°F, with automatic switchover to gas heating when temperatures or load conditions favor combustion.

Pro-Installer Tip: Dual Fuel Changeover Optimization

The Technical Friction: The GZV9S outdoor unit ships with 162 oz. of R-32 charge, factory-set for 15 feet of ⅜" liquid line. In dual fuel configurations, the changeover balance point between heat pump and gas furnace operation is critical. If the balance point is set too high, the system defaults to gas unnecessarily; too low, and the heat pump runs inefficiently in extreme cold, increasing compressor wear and energy costs.

The Long-Term Prevention: After completing the final charge procedure per the installation manual, verify subcooling at the service valve reads 11±1°F. Document the outdoor ambient and superheat readings during commissioning. This baseline data prevents nuisance “no heat” service calls 6–12 months later when homeowners first experience the changeover during cold snaps.

The Expert Validation: Use a quality digital manifold gauge set with R-32 PT tables loaded (e.g., Testo 570s or Fieldpiece SM480V) to confirm EEV superheat is in auto-control range. The GZV9S EEV is self-regulating, but confirming the charge with weigh-in method plus subcooling verification ensures the system operates within design parameters.

The Professional Standard: R-32 is an A2L (mildly flammable) refrigerant. EPA Section 608 certification is required for handling. Verify the installation complies with UL 60335-2-40 requirements and all local mechanical codes regarding A2L refrigerant charge limits in enclosed spaces. Confirm the R-32 sensor integrated into the indoor coil is operational before system handoff.

Key Benefits

  • High-Efficiency Rated Performance: This matched system achieves up to 18.2 SEER2 and 9.0 HSPF2, verified under AHRI Certificate #216699909. The variable-speed inverter compressor modulates capacity to match the load, reducing energy waste compared to fixed-speed systems.
  • Low-GWP R-32 Refrigerant: R-32 has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 675 — approximately 68% lower than R-410A (GWP 2,088). This aligns with EPA AIM Act phase-down requirements and positions the system for long-term refrigerant availability.
  • Dual Fuel Versatility: The heat pump provides efficient electric heating down to -20°F ambient, while the 80,000 BTU 97% AFUE gas furnace serves as a backup for extreme cold or high-demand conditions. This configuration often qualifies for utility rebates in regions with time-of-use electricity rates.
  • Quiet Operation: The GZV9S outdoor unit operates at 71 dBA in normal cooling mode, with a selectable Quiet Mode that can reduce sound output to as low as 45 dBA — suitable for installations near bedrooms or property lines with noise ordinance constraints.
  • All-Aluminum Evaporator Coil: The indoor coil uses an all-aluminum construction that eliminates galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals, a known failure point in copper-aluminum coils exposed to high-humidity or coastal environments.
  • 21” Cabinet Depth: Both the indoor coil and blower/air handler sections use a 21” depth cabinet, which fits through standard 22” attic access openings without requiring disassembly — reducing installation time and potential for field damage.
