This Goodman 5-Ton Dual Fuel System delivers up to 16.0 SEER2 and 8.5 HSPF2 efficiency ratings using low-GWP R-32 refrigerant.
The dual fuel configuration pairs the GZV9S variable-speed inverter heat pump with a two-stage, 96% AFUE gas furnace, providing automatic switchover between electric heat pump and gas heating for optimized comfort and energy savings in all climate zones.
AHRI Certified (Certificate #: 218003043). ENERGY STAR® Cold Climate Certified.

Pro-Installer Tip
Technical Friction: On 5-ton dual fuel systems with R-32, the GZV9S outdoor unit requires ⅞" to 1⅛" suction line adapters at the service valve. If the furnace is in a tight closet or alcove, verify that the combined coil-on-furnace stack height clears the ceiling by the code-required service access minimum before committing to the installation position.
Long-Term Prevention: After evacuation, hold a standing vacuum below 500 microns for a minimum of 10 minutes using a Fieldpiece SVG3 or equivalent digital micron gauge. R-32 is less forgiving of moisture contamination than R-410A; residual moisture in the lineset will form acids that degrade compressor windings within 12–18 months, leading to a nuisance compressor fault code well before the warranty period expires.
Expert Validation: Use a digital torque wrench (e.g., Ritchie Yellow Jacket 60648) calibrated to the flare nut specifications in the GZV9S installation manual. Over- or under-torqued flare connections are the #1 root cause of slow R-32 leaks flagged by the unit's onboard pressure transducer diagnostics.
Professional Standard: R-32 is classified as an A2L (mildly flammable) refrigerant under ASHRAE Standard 34. Verify local AHJ adoption of 2024 UMC/IMC codes for A2L allowances. In California SCAQMD jurisdictions, confirm the furnace NOx rating meets the applicable ng/J standard before the final inspection.
Key Benefits
- High-Efficiency Operation: Up to 16.0 SEER2 / 8.5 HSPF2 ratings reduce annual energy consumption compared to standard-efficiency systems, potentially qualifying for federal tax credits and utility rebates.
- Low-GWP R-32 Refrigerant: R-32 has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 675—approximately 68% lower than R-410A (GWP 2,088)—reducing the system's direct environmental impact while maintaining thermodynamic performance.
- Variable-Speed Inverter Compressor: The GZV9S swing compressor modulates output to match real-time load conditions, minimizing temperature swings and reducing cycling losses compared to single- or two-stage compressors.
- Dual Fuel Flexibility: Automatic switchover between electric heat pump and gas furnace operation based on outdoor temperature provides optimized heating efficiency across a wide ambient range (-20°F to 70°F for heat pump mode).
- Quiet Operation: Quiet-mode feature offers up to 3 selectable sound levels (as low as 45 dBA) on the outdoor unit, suitable for installations near bedrooms, patios, or property-line-adjacent locations.
- ENERGY STAR® Cold Climate Certified: Meets or exceeds ENERGY STAR Cold Climate heat pump criteria, validating heating performance in sub-freezing conditions down to -20°F ambient.
