    If you’re new to HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems, selecting the right size BTU (British Thermal Unit) system can seem daunting. This guide will break down the process into simple steps.

    1. What is BTU?

    • Definition: BTU measures the amount of energy needed to heat or cool a space. More BTUs mean more heating or cooling power.

    2. Why Size Matters

    • An undersized system will struggle to heat or cool your home, leading to discomfort.
    • An oversized system will cycle on and off too frequently, wasting energy and causing wear and tear.

    3. Measure Your Space

    • Find Your Square Footage:
      • Measure the length and width of each room.
      • Multiply the length by the width for each room, then add them up for the total square footage.
    • Example:
      • Living Room: 15 ft x 20 ft = 300 sq. ft.
      • Bedroom: 10 ft x 12 ft = 120 sq. ft.
      • Total = 300 + 120 = 420 sq. ft.

    4. General BTU Guidelines

    • A rough estimate is 20 BTUs per square foot.
    • Example: For 420 sq. ft.: 420 sq. ft. × 20 BTUs/sq. ft. = 8,400 BTUs 

    5. Adjusting BTU Calculations Based on Specific Factors

    When determining the right BTU size for your HVAC system, it's important to consider various factors that can affect your heating and cooling needs. Here’s a more detailed breakdown:

    - Ceiling Height

    • Standard Ceiling (8 feet): The basic BTU calculation (20 BTUs per square foot) works well.
    • Higher Ceilings: For ceilings taller than 8 feet, you’ll need to increase the BTU calculation. A common rule of thumb is to add about 10% for each additional foot of height.
      • Example: If you have a 10-foot ceiling in a 400 sq. ft. room:
        • Base BTUs: 400×20=8,000400 \times 20 = 8,000
        • Increase for height: 8,000×10%=8008,000 \times 10\% = 800
        • Total BTUs Needed: 8,8008,800

    - Insulation Quality

    • Well-Insulated Homes: If your home has good insulation, you can stick with the basic BTU calculation.
    • Average Insulation: If your home has average insulation, consider adding 10% to your BTU needs.
    • Poor Insulation: For homes with poor insulation, you may need to add 20% or more. Check for drafts, gaps, or insufficient insulation in walls and attics.
      • Example: If your calculated BTUs are 10,000 and you have poor insulation:

      All orders made before 2:00 PM EST are processed within 2-3 business days. Items ordered on weekends (Saturday or Sunday) start to process and ship as early as the following business day.

      If we are experiencing a high volume of orders, shipments may be delayed by a few days. Please allow additional days in transit for delivery. If there will be a significant delay in shipment of your order, we will contact you via email or telephone.

      Shipping rates & delivery estimates

      We offer standard free shipping via UPS Ground, FedEx Ground, and Freight for all orders in the United States. We do not currently ship to international locations.

      Damages & Missing Items

      Please inspect all packages for damaged or missing items before accepting your shipment. If any of the items are missing or appear to have any type of damage; Mark the Receipt Damaged and/or missing (write which items are missing, or damaged and describe the damage).


      Only refuse the items that are damaged, keep and sign for the items that are in good condition and be sure to notate the items that are being refused for damages clearly on the delivery receipt.       Although Mini Split Systems Direct is NOT responsible for shipping damage, if your item(s) do arrive damaged, please send photos to info@minisplitsystemsdirect.com  and we can assist with filing a claim against the shipping carrier to cover the cost of damages.

      Pre-Orders, Backorders, and Out-of-Stock Items:

      Mini Split Systems Direct is dedicated to sourcing any item you may need and getting it to you as quickly as possible. Any items that are out of stock, or available for Pre-Order will be noted on the product page. You are welcome to place an order for Pre-Order items, backorder items, and for items that are out of stock, and will ship them the second they become available from the manufacturer, ensuring you get the item before anyone else.       Returns

      We have a 30-day return policy, which means you have 30 days after receiving your item to request a return.

      To be eligible for a return, your item must be in the same condition that you received it, unused and in its original packaging.

      All returns are subject to a 15% restocking fee, and the purchaser is responsible for the cost of return shipping.

      Refunds

      We will notify you once we’ve received and inspected your return, and let you know if the refund was approved or not.       Cancellations

      All orders canceled after 24 hours are subject to a 5% administration fee, If your order has not been shipped yet, this is the only fee you will incur. This is a fee that covers administrative and personnel fees.

      If your order has been shipped, you will not be charged a 5% administration fee, the standard return procedures will apply and you will be responsible for the cost of return shipping, and a 15% restocking fee will be ducted from your refund. Refunds will only be issued to the original payment method that you used when placing your order.

      Exchanges

      The fastest way to ensure you get what you want is to return the item you have (see return process above), and once the return is accepted, make a separate purchase for the new item.

      Our goal is to consistently provide the best pricing in the marketplace online and we work very diligently to do so. If you happen to see another online shop that offers a lower price than us within six months of your date please let us know and we’ll be happy to refund the difference on your original payment method. Moreover, because we are consistently working with our suppliers to get better rates we know that you can feel very comfortable and confident that you are seeing the best prices that can be provided for the products listed on our site.

      Moving forward if you find the same item that we carry on another website that has a lower price please submit that to us within six months of your purchase date and we will refund you the difference.

      If it is a case of seeing a lower price on another website and we need to send a partial refund simply email us the link to the exact product and brand from our site and also the link from our competitors site so we can inspect the pricing. Again this needs to be within six months from the date of your order and we will review your submission and apply a credit if necessary.

      Our Price Match Policy has some limitations:

      • The item must have already been purchased from our site prior to asking for this to be reviewed and submitted.

        • Higher Ceilings: For ceilings taller than 8 feet, you’ll need to increase the BTU calculation. A common rule of thumb is to add about 10% for each additional foot of height.
          • Example: If you have a 10-foot ceiling in a 400 sq. ft. room:

          Cancellations

          If your order has been shipped, you will not be charged a 5% administration fee, the standard return procedures will apply and you will be responsible for the cost of return shipping, and a 15% restocking fee will be ducted from your refund. Refunds will only be issued to the original payment method that you used when placing your order.

          The fastest way to ensure you get what you want is to return the item you have (see return process above), and once the return is accepted, make a separate purchase for the new item.

          Price Match Policy

          Our goal is to consistently provide the best pricing in the marketplace online and we work very diligently to do so. If you happen to see another online shop that offers a lower price than us within six months of your date please let us know and we’ll be happy to refund the difference on your original payment method.           Do you have a storefront?

          At this time we do not have a storefront, we're an online only Authorized Dealer for all the brand we carry. We do have plans to open a storefront in the future.

          How do I check the status of my order?

          After placing your order you'll receive a confirmation email, and after a Shipment Confirmation email once your order has shipped which will contain your tracking number(s). The tracking number will be active within 24 hours.           How long is shipping and delivery?

          All orders made before 2:00 PM EST are processed within 2 - 3 business days. Items ordered on weekends (Saturday or Sunday) start to process and ship as early as the following business day. Estimated delivery time is 3 - 7 days.

          If we are experiencing a high volume of orders, shipments may be delayed by a few days. Please allow additional days in transit for delivery. If there will be a significant delay in shipment of your order, we will contact you via email or telephone.

          Efficient, compact, possible to DIY install

          Pretty quiet and compact unit, managed to DIY install 3 ton myself including ductwork, custom plenums and new electrical / drainage / thermostat wiring in 3 full weekends. Quick connect lineset made this possible (no vacuum or soldering needed!) Seems to be pretty efficient so far (northern california climate)

          Love being able to install all by myself.

          I take pride in my work and feel confident that my install was done better then hiring an HVAC company. I know many in that profession get their feelings hurt when you bring up doing it yourself. Was quoted $9k for system replacement and I was able to do for less than $3500. This is not for your average DYI person as custom duct work and electrical upgrades will likely be needed. I had about 31 hours into this replacement. That includes tarring out, pouring concrete pad, custom duct work, electrical upgrades, and system calibration. If your line set length is going to be close I recommend going up a size. I had planned to have about 6ft extra but due to line hookup locations I had just the right amount. I had to call Mini Split Systems Direct support to ask about my thermostat compatibility and they were helpful.

          DIY install went without a hitch

          Update: After owning this unit for 6 months I am still very happy. Our home has never been more comfortable and quiet. Zero problems so far. Attached is a screenshot of the monthly usage report from the Sensi smart thermostat that I installed to control the MrCool heat pump.

          Original review: I replaced my furnace with this heat pump as a DIY project about a week and a half ago, and I'm very happy with the results so far. Our weather has been all over the place since then. We've experienced outdoor temperature fluctuations between about 35 degrees and 94 degrees so since I completed the install, and the Mr Cool Universal Heat Pump/Air Handler system has heated and cooled our home to a very comfortable 71 degrees without any problem. I scaled the system back to 2-ton mode when I installed it to see how it would do. So far so good. I may convert it back to the default 3-ton (36,000 BTU) mode If I find that it's having a hard time keeping up with hotter or colder temperatures later this year.

          This new system is much, much quieter than our old furnace. Most of the vents are almost silent, and I only hear a light fan noise from one or two vents closest to the air handler. The inverter motors turn on quietly with no jolting sound whatsoever, which I think helps me to sleep better at night. The outside unit is very quiet too. Standing right next to this condenser I hear my neighbors condenser louder than my own, and the neighbor's condenser is about 40 feet away.

          This is my first HVAC replacement. I consider myself pretty handy but the project was still a little intimidating to take on because I had zero experience replacing furnaces or working with refrigeration lines. I'm glad I did the install myself though. The no-vac hose installation was pretty easy. The hardest part of the install was building a ducted stand for the air handler to sit on for the air return (I did the upflow configuration), but youtube videos helped me to figure that part out. I probably saved two or three thousand dollars doing this project myself, which means I was able to get a nicer system than a cheaper/less efficient system would have cost to be professionally installed. I consider this a double win.

          Here are a few things to keep in mind if you do the install yourself:

          You will need big wrenches to install the lineset. Technically you are supposed to use a torque wrench to tighten them to the exact amounts specified in the manual, but I couldn't find anywhere local that had an open ended torque wrench that would fit the 5/8 inch line set fittings ( I think one required a 1 1/4 inch wrench, and another was a little bigger (maybe 1 and 3/8 inches.) I used the crows feet attachments I had to tighten the 3/8 inch fittings without a problem, but the bigger lineset fittings I had to just give it my best guess. No leaks so far. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

          One thing I couldn't find anywhere in the Mr Cool manuals was whether or not the air handler had a slot for an air filter. It does have slot in the bottom that has a metal mesh filter. It's not really an air filter, but it looks like you could slide it out and use a 20x20x1 inch air filter in this spot. I can't say for sure because I decided to add a 4-inch filter box underneath the air handler instead.

          Once you finish connecting the lineset you should open the valves to release the refrigerant on both the outside unit (condenser) and the air handler. The instructions only mention doing this for the condenser.

          I should also mention that the system seems to be very efficient. I occasionally use a meter to see how much electricity the condenser is using, and the highest I've seen it at so far is only around 6.5 amps (240 volts). Again, this is at the 2-ton setting.

          There were no reviews reviews on this system when I bought it, and it looks like this will be the first. Hopefully it will help anyone deciding whether or not to buy it. I'm glad I did.

          Exceeded Expectations

          I'm very happy with the results of this unit. The Heat pump works amazingly well compared to the older carrier heatpump. The lines were very hard to bend without damage and I would suggest have a line-set with elbows where needed installed. The unit is very quiet and worked with my Nest Thermostat

          Very impressed with the ease of intall and quality

          The item was shipped quickly and arrived ahead of schedule. Unfortunately, after unpacking I noticed some damage on the outdoor heat pump unit. This was a little concerning because I had to install it pretty quickly in order to get the heat back on. I contacted. Mini Split Systems Direct and they got back with me in 30 minutes. I sent them some photos and a description and they took care of it immediately. The new part was shipped free of charge and arrived. Just a couple of days later.

          Everything has been installed and working perfectly, I’m very pleased with both the product and Mini Split Systems Direct, for fixing an issue that they may not have even create. so often you have people passing the buck, but they took care of me and I thank them for that. I would not hesitate to order from them again.

          As for the Mr. cool unit and line set, it did take two people to install it and a little bit of troubleshooting with the thermostat, but it is working perfectly now for the last couple of weeks even in quite cold weather. The defrost function works well. The inside unit is extremely quiet, I used it to replace an old air conditioner with natural gas heat which was much louder.

          Time will tell if the annual energy consumption/cost goes down and how long it will last, but the workmanship seems to be very high-quality.
